Luanda, Angola, 19 Sept – Angola’s deputy Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, Daniel Dário Katata, Friday and Saturday is due to visit a cotton producing project in the city of Sumbe, Kwanza Sul province to assess its progress.
The project, which is valued at US$40 million, will provide employment to 1914 rural families and is due to be concluded in March 2009.
Implementation of the project, which began in 2007, is the responsibility of South Korean companies, Samsung Corporation and Hanil Engineering & Construction.
Speaking Thursday to Angolan news agency Angop, Katata said that he would evaluate the progress made so far, following a slight delay in installing the irrigation system.
In terms of benefits, Katata said that re-launching cotton production would set up conditions to provide work for producers and increase domestic production and thus cotton exports. (macauhub)
