Mozambique: Government prepares to join Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative

23 September 2008

Maputo, Mozambique, 23 Sept – The Mozambican government is preparing to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), and plans to put forward its membership proposal this year, Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported.

EITI is a voluntary initiative created internationally in 2002 with the aim of bringing together, within each member country, companies, governments and civil society organisations to manage extractive resources in a transparent and sustainable manner.

The paper added that despite recognising that in Mozambique there were already standards and procedures in place that ensure transparency, the government sees this initiative as a was of adding procedures that are used by other countries in order to improve the process of transparent management of resources and thus ensure that Mozambicans can increasingly benefit from the extractive industry.
