Lubango, Angola, 10 Oct – The ornamental rock industry in Angola’s Huíla province over the last three years has netted over US$29 million from exports, Angolan news agency Angop reported Wednesday from Lubango.
According to a summary report of 2004/2007 indicators for the sector, 135 cubic metres of black granite were exported in the period.
Nine companies currently operate in the ornamental rock sub-sector, exploring black, pink and grey granite and marble quarries located in the municipalities of Chibia, Quipungo and Gambos.
The market for exporting ornamental rocks from Huíla has mainly focused on Europe, particularly Spain, Portugal and Italy.
Quarrying for ornamental rocks began in 1994 in Huíla with the Metarocha company, which has so far exported over 2 million cubic metres of stone. (macauhub)
