17 November 2008

Maputo, Mozambique, 17 Nov – Mozambican electricity company Electricidade de Moçambique (EdM) is due to build a new 610/680 megawatt thermal power plant in the district of Moamba in Maputo province, Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported.

The cost of the project, estimated at US$1.3 billion, will be borne by EdM in partnership with Mozambican group Intelec Holdings and South African group Sasol, and the project will make use of gas produced in Pande and Temand, in Mozambique’s Inhambane province.

At a meeting held last week between EdM and South Africa’s Eskom to discuss the positioning of the companies in relation to the hosting of the soccer world cup in 2010 in South Africa, the companies decided that the Moamba project would be a priority for both sides. (macauhub)
