Mozambique: Around 400,000 tourists expected to visit Mozambique in December

Maputo, Mozambique, 15 Dec – Mozambique’s minister of Tourism has estimated that over 400,000 tourists will visit Mozambique in the period between mid December and mid January, according to Mozambican news agency AIM.

Tourism minister Fernando Sumbana said, meanwhile that the number of tourists in 2008 was expected to increase between 16 and 20 percent against 2007 when 1.3 million tourists visited Mozambique.

The minister noted that each tourist remained in Mozambique for an average of three days and spent an average US$60 per day, excluding accommodation.

The tourism industry accounted for 5 percent of Mozambique’s GDP, but has great potential to grow.

In 2007 tourism revenues totalled US$163 million, a rise of 17 percent against 2006.

Mozambique’s hotels and other accommodation provide a total of 17,000 beds and the sector employs 37,000 people, half of which are women. (macauhub)
