23 December 2008

Dundo, Angola, 23 Dec – Chinese company China National Electronics Import & Export (SINOMACH) is due in January to begin work on extending the runway at Dundo airport, in Angola´s Lunda Norte province, in order to allow it to be used by medium-sized and large aircraft, according to Angolan news agency Angop.

The new Dundo runway will be 2,500 metres long and 35 metres wide, which is an extra 700 metres in length and 15 in width than the current runway.

Work will also include building a new terminal, and is expected to be concluded within nine months at a cost of US$16 million.

Domingos José, the director of Angola’s national airport management company Enana-Ep said that the airport’s current facilities were 50 years old and needed to be refurbished in order to receive medium-sized and large aircraft.

Currently the airport receives only light aircraft, specifically those owned by private airline Guicango, the only one operating regularly to Dundo.

In order to travel to the coast of Angola passengers have to travel to the municipality of Cambulo, 90 kilometres from Dundo (the provincial capital), or the neighbouring province of Lunda Sul, where TAAG operates.(macauhub)
