Mozambique: Portugal Telecom to compete for third mobile telecom license in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique, 26 Dec – Portugal Telecom (PT) plans to compete for the international tender, in January 2009, for the third mobile telephony license in Mozambique, according to Internet site Canal de Moçambique.

PT manifested its interest to the Mozambican authorities via its chief executive Zeinal Bava on a recent visit to the country.

According to Africa Monitor, the Mozambican authorities viewed PT’s interest in a favourable light.

Portugal Telecom is preparing to launch Internet Service Provider Sapo Mozambique and will provide 1,000 Magalhaes computers to
Mozambican schools.

Other parties potentially interested in the third license include South Africa’s MTN and Kuwait’s Zain, as well as other European and Asian groups that plan to enter the African market. (macauhub)
