Dondo, Angola, 31 Dec – Brazilian construction company Odebrecht is to move ahead with the refurbishment of the Cambambe dam in Angola’s Malanje province, which was built in the 1960s with four generators of a capacity of 45 megawatts each, the Angop news agency reported Wednesday.
During a visit to the dam by Energy Minister, Emanuela Vieira Lopes it was announced that the refurbishment and modernisation work would begin in January 2009.
The Cambabmbe hydroelectric facility provides electricity to the provinces of Luanda, Kwanza Norte and Kwanza Sul and is a link to the Capanda power facility, located in Malanje province.
The Angolan government recently approved a capacity increase for the dam and construction of a new plant that would double electricity generation capacity.
The Cambambe dam is located along the river Kwanza, which is one of the biggest in Angola. (macauhub)
