14 January 2009

Maputo, Mozambique, 14 Jan – The municipality of Maputo plans to invest between US$17 and US$20 million to build a sanitary landfill site, according to municipal health official, João Schwalbach, cited by radio station Rádio de Moçambique.

Schwalbach said that the municipality currently had just one waste site, which was merely an area where waste could be dumped without any prior treatment.

The director said that the location for building the sanitary landfill had been chosen and environmental impact and economic feasibility surveys had been carried out.

The municipality of Maputo is now set to launch the tender for construction of the site and identify partners for its funding. (macauhub)
