Mozambique: World Bank funds construction of dam in Sofala

15 January 2009

Maputo, Mozambique, 15 Jan – A dam on Mozambique’s Metuchira river in Sofala province is due to be built this year with funding from the World Bank, Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported.

The paper cited Nhamatanda director, Paulo Majacunene, as saying that the technical survey for the dam had been carried out by staff from the Regional Waters Admisnitration, the World Bank and the Public Works and Housing Ministry.

Majacunene said that construction of the dam would minimise the problem of residents crossing the river at Metochira, as well as allowing the water to be used to irrigate agricultural land. (macauhub)
