23 January 2009

Maputo, Mozambique, 23 Jan – Mozambique’s new national sports stadium is expected to be ready in the first three months of 2010 when the FIFA World Cup is staged in neighboring South Africa, the project’s director, Celso Mabjaia, said Thursday in Maputo.

Mabjaia said building work is progressing at good pace and the Chinese firm that won the tender says the project will be brought in on schedule, namely between March and April 2010. The original timetable was for 27 months from April 2008 and a completion date of July 2010.

The stadium is being built in the Maputo suburb of Zimpeto and is being funded to the tune of US$ 57 million by Beijing. The project director said 307 Mozambicans are currently working on the project along with 203 Chinese. More workers from China will soon arrive. (macauhub)
