Cape Verde: Government wants to build dock for fishing boats and open ice factory

5 February 2009

Praia, Cape Verde, 5 Feb – The government of Cape Verde is seeking funding for construction of a fishing vessel repair dock, one of the main demands made by fishermen, the Minister responsible for the sector said Wednesday in Praia.

According to José Maria Veiga, Minsiter for the Environment, Rural Development and Marine Resources, the lack of a repair dock affects the island of Santiago, as well as other islands, with fishermen also asking for more ways of preserving fish.

The Minister Wednesday inaugurated a new ice machine and silo at Praia’s fishing port, at an investment of 14 million cape Verdean escudos, which will produce a further 5 tonnes of ice per day and store 10 tonnes.

Insufficient ice “led to conflict between fishermen and management problems,” the minister said, adding that the investment was part of a project to export more better quality fish.

Praia’s fishing port has 30 fishing vessels operating and employs 800 people, 450 of which are female fish sellers. (macauhub)
