11 February 2009

Macau, China, 11 Feb – The government of Macau said on Tuesday that it planned to strengthen the cooperation with Guangdong province and Hong Kong, as part of the development of the region of the Pearl River Delta and Great Pearl River Delta.

This is according to Francis Tam, the Macau Secretary for the Economy and Finance, who spoke during the second meeting of cooperation between the two Special Administrative Regions and the People’s Republic of China, as reported by news agency MacauNews.

Tam said that as part of the 2008-2020 development and reform plan for the Pearl River Delta, Macau is going to take part in cooperation projects of large inter-regional infrastructures, as well as tourism, exhibition, convention and logistical service sectors and Hengqin island.

Tam also stressed the importance of continuing the already close ties that the two Special Administrative Regions have in the tourism sector, as part of cooperation between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.

The Pearl River Delta includes Hong Kong, Macau and part of Guangdong province (including the municipal areas of Dongguan, Foshan, Guangzhou, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Shenzhen, Zhaoqing, Zhongshan and Zhuhai), a region which was opened up by the central government in 1978 to foreign trade and investment.

The Pearl River Delta, despite being located in just 0.5 percent of the Chinese territory and having just 5 percent of the country’s population, accounts for 20 percent of country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The population of the Pearl River Delta, which is estimated to total 50 million people, is projected to grow to 75 million within a decade.

In the meeting, Hong Kong and Macau agreed to strengthen its relations in promoting the tourist sector, namely for Guangdong, to jointly create packages with “itineraries of various cities”, and to promote conventions and exhibitions.

During his stay in Hong Kong, Tam focused his time on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and visited the bridge construction on Stonecutters Island.

Macau has a population of 530,000 people and the population of Hong Kong totals 7 million. (macauhub)
