Sao Tome and Principe: European Union funds water supply project for 21 locations

26 February 2009

Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe, 26 Feb – Construction of a water supply system for 21 locations on the island of Sao Tome began Wednesday with funding of 2 million euros from the European Development Fund.

The project includes drawing up a hydro-geological survey to define the area’s water potential, deforestation and construction of water tapping facilities, amongst other matters.

The EU representative for Sao Tome and Principe, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, Thierry Mathisse, said that the funding for the project had been provided following a request from the Sao Tome government in 2005, when a cholera epidemic devastated the country.

Mathisse also said that the project “will provide access to quality water for about 6,500 people.” (macauhub)
