Mozambique: South Africa and Mozambique should integrate border posts, official says

4 March 2009

Komatipoort, South Africa, 4 March – South Africa and Mozambique should integrate the border posts of Libombos and Ressano Garcia into a single border post in order to increase security measures on the border, an official said in Komatipoort Tuesday.

Xoliswa Sibeko, the director-general of the Department of Correctional Services, said that a single border post would make it easier for the legal transit of people and goods across the border.

Sibeko also said that such a decision would make it possible to reduce long queues and provide a service to travellers.

Although the South African government has given priority to inspection of people and goods at border posts, these efforts have been boosted ahead of the 2009 Confederations Cup and the Soccer World Cup 2010.

Due to the expected influx of football fans, a Joint Border Clearance Initiative is expected to be implemented by both South Africa and neighbouring countries at its border posts. (macauhub)
