Guinea Bissau: Regional African organisation donates 8.7 million euros to State Budget

Bissau, Guinea Bissau, 17 April – The Economic Community of West African States (ECWAC) has donated 5.7 billion CFA francs (8.7 million euros) to cover the budget deficit of Guinea Bissau, the Guinean prime minister said Thursday in Bissau.

On his arrival in Bissau following a 24-hour visit to Burkina Faso, Carlos Gomes Júnior said that the donation guarantee was given by the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Campaoré, who is also the acting president of ECWAC.

As well as totally covering the budgetary deficit for 2009, ECWAC also pledged to make efforts to help the Guinea Bissau government to find financial resources for the payment of five months’ worth of slaries owed to state workers, Júnior said.

The Guinean Prime Minister also said he had been given indications by Campaoré that the sub-regional organisation would provide the Bissau government with resources for it to honour its commitments with local banks and international financial organsiations.

As well as Guinea Bissau, ECWAC’s members are Benin, Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. (macauhub)
