Cape Verde: Portuguese airline to fly to Sao Vicente as soon as airport receives certification

27 May 2009

Praia, Cape Verde, 27 May – TAP – Air Portugal will start flying three times a week to the Cape Verdean island of Sao Vicente just as soon as the new airport is certified and can received n night time flights, the airline’s delegate in Cape Verde said Tuesday in Praia.

Luís Garcia told Portuguese news agency Lusa that this could happen as of August as certification and finalisation of technical aspects were underway at the remodelled Sao Pedro airport, near MIndelo.

As soon as it starts operating to the island fo São Vicente, with TACV as a service provider, TAP will have a total of 13 or 14 flights per week to Cape Verde – daily flights to Sal island and four weekly flights to the capital, Praia (Santiago Island).

According to the TAP delegate in Cape Verde, the airline’s decision was made after a feasibility study was carried out, which concluded that “there is room in the market” for direct flights between Lisbon and Mindelo.

As soon as Sao Vicente’s airport is opened up to international traffic, Cape Verde will have four international airports –Sal, Santiago and Boavista.

In relation to Boavista, and because it is a traditional charter flights market, TAP, is not, for now, interested in linking it to Lisbon by air, Garcia said. (macauhub)
