East Timor government begins property census

9 June 2009

Lisbon, Portugal, 9 June – The National Directorate for Land, Property and Registry Services of East Timor’s Justice Ministry has launched its census of properties, in order to determine ownership of assets and real estate, the East Timor embassy in Portugal announced.

The first phase of the survey consists of gathering information about assets and real estate, including the identity of the people that say they own them.

At a later stage, the information gathered will be published and a deadline set for any interested party to claim a property they believe to be theirs.

The process is being closely followed by the East Timor embassies around the world, particularly in Portugal, via their Consular Sections, as around 3,500 East Timorese are resident in Portugal.

The website for people interested in the process is www.itaniarai.tl. (macauhub)
