Energy potential attracts Italian companies to Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique, 3 Sept – In the next few days a joint working team is to be set up including Mozambican and Italian staff to draw up a cooperation protocol for the energy sector, Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported Thursday.

The paper said that Italy was interested in implementing various projects in the area of renewable energy production in Mozambique, including biofuels, solar, wind and hydro systems.

At the Maputo International Fair (FACIM 2009), which has been on since Monday, Italy is represented by over 40 companies, mainly with interests in the energy sector.

Mozambique’s Energy Minister, Salvador Namburete announced meanwhile that Italian investment projects to implement a wind farm in Matutuíne district for production of 20 MW of energy, were at an advanced stage.

Another large project is focused on biofuel production from jatropha in area to be implemented in the district of Moamba, Maputo province. Currently approval is being awaited from the Agriculture Ministry.

As well as the announced projects, Italy is also involved, via ENH, in the prospecting and research for oil in the sea off Mozambique. (macauhub)
