Maputo, Mozambique, 4 Sept – The governments of Mozambique and Italy Thursday in Maputo signed a memorandum of understanding to provide incentives for Italian business investments in the Mozambican energy sector over the next five years.

Mozambique’s Energy Minister, Salvador Namburete said that “conditions have been created for Italian businesspeople to be involved in the development of the energy sector in Mozambique.”

“The agreement includes establishing partnerships for the development of all areas of energy, taking into account Mozambique’s enormous potential in this field,” Namburete noted.

New sources of power, such as solar energy, wind energy and hydroelectricity, will be the main focus of the activities of Italian companies in Mozambique.

Italian investment projects to implement a wind farm in Matutuíne district for production of 20 MW of energy are at an advanced stage.

Another large project is focused on biofuel production from jatropha in area to be implemented in the district of Moamba, Maputo province.

As well as the announced projects, Italy is also involved, via ENH, in the prospecting and research for oil in the sea off Mozambique. (macauhub)
