Mozambique announces creation of space agency

Geneva, Switzerland, 8 Oct – Mozambique is preparing to set up a space agency, according to Mozambique’s Science and Technology Minister, Venâncio Massingue, speaking at the International Conference of World Leaders on Telecommunications taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to Wednesday’s edition of Mozambican newspaper Notícias, the establishment of the agency aims to encourage the creation of instruments that will help to predict natural disasters.

During a speech at the Telecom World 2009 conference organised by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and by the Swiss Confederation, Massingue said that the government was focused on setting up low orbit satellites, as well as encouraging companies that are involved with wireless and satellite technological solutions in order to launch a programme to train Mozambican technical staff.
