Brick factory reopens in Saurimo, Angola after 20 years

12 October 2009

Saurimo, Angola, 12 Oct – The Fucaúma ceramics factory, some 30 kilometres from the Angolan city of Saurimo, recently reopened with daily production of around 8,000 bricks after more than two decades of halted production due to the country’s civil war, newspaper Jornal de Angola reported.

Refurbishment and re-equipment work, estimated to cost US$2 million, took eight months, the chief executive of Sociedade de Cerâmica do Leste, the factory’s owner told the paper.

Pedro Capumba said that current production, using “medium level technology”, was a first stage and the following stage would include production of roof tiles and 25,000 bricks per day, of different sizes and types.

Saurimo’s administrator, Fernando Xili, said that reopening the ceramics factory “opens up new encouraging prospects for the region, due to easier access to products at modest prices, as well as encouraging other initiatives.” (macauhub)
