Praia, Cape Verde, 30 Oct – The number of companies active in Cape Verde he number of guests that checked into Cape Verde’s hotels in 2008 rose by 6 percent in 2008 against 2007, the country’s National Statistic Institute (INE) said Friday in Praia.
According to the figures, collated between September, 2008 and April of this year, Cape Verde in 2007 had 7,512 companies, as compared to 5,460 in 2002, a rise of 38 percent, with a greater incidence on the islands of Santiago (3,233 companies), Sao Vicente (1,531), Sal (775) and Santo Antao (522).
Boavista island saw a rise of 88 percent, rising from 108 to 202 companies, whilst Brava island saw no growth and Sao Nicolau saw a drop of 17 percent from 371 to 306 companies.
The number of exclusively foreign companies rose three-fold from 190 in 2002 to 577 in 2007, accounting for 15.4 percent of total employees (9.9 percent in 2002) and 22.5 percent of total turnover (8.4 percent in 2002).
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE) the survey noted that the general commerce sector (retail and wholesale) has the greatest weight amongst companies active in the country. This is followed by the sectors of accommodation and restaurants, construction, and real estate amongst others. (macauhub)
