Portugal’s Unicer introduces Guinness Original to Angola in partnership with Diageo

Porto, Portugal, 2 Dec – Portuguese beer group União Cervejeira (Unicer) is due to start selling Guiness in Angola in partnership with transnational drinks company Diageo, which owns the brand, the groups said in a statement Monday.

As part of this five-year partnership, Unicer will manufacture, export and distribute Guiness Original, a new variety of the brand, via its local partners, and is projected to reach 180,000 consumers in the first year.

Unicer thus consolidates its presence in Angola, where its sells around 125 million litres of beer per year, of the Super Bock, Cristal and Carlsberg brands, and Diageo is entering in a segment where it is mainly present through the sale of spirits.

Currently, 30 percent of the beer sold in Angola is imported and around 140 million litres are Portuguese in origin.

The statement said that Angola is the third largest beer market in Africa, and in 2008 represented sales of 700 million litres, which is the equivalent of 7 percent of the beer consumed in the whole of Africa.

Diageo owns brands of spirits, wine and beer such as Johnnie Walker, Guinness, Smirnoff, JB, Baileys, Cuervo, Tanqueray, Captain Morgan, Crown Royal, Beaulieu Vineyard and Sterling Vineyards and is present in over 180 countries. (macauhub)
