Macau has very “important and irreplaceable” role as platform between China and Portuguese-speaking world

11 December 2009

Macau, China, 11 Dec – Macau has a very “important and irreplaceable” role as an economic and commercial platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries, the secretary-general for the Cooperation Forum, Chang Hexi said Thursday in Macau.

Recently arrived in Macau after being nominated by Beijing to head up the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, Chang Hexi said that via the forum, “cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries had developed very quickly.”

“Macau has a longstanding economic and trade relationship with the Portuguese-speaking countries and has economic and trade relations with over 100 countries and regions across the world,” he told Portuguese news agency Lusa.

Chang Hexi also said that Macau had “perfect infrastructures” and financial services that created “a good environment to boost economic and trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries.”

On summing up the activities of the Forum, which was set up in 2003, Chang Hexi said that the permanent office had made “notable progress” and that all cooperation had been “promoted in a stable manner with evident results.”

Chang Hexi, who said he had a positive view of the six years of activity of the Forum and that trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking world was growing – despite a fall in 2009 due to the global financial crisis – also noted that China would “continue to make use of this important platform.”

The new secretary-general of the permanent office for the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau), Chang Hexi, was instated on 19 November.

Chang Hexi’s career was previously linked to the Chinese Trade Ministry and he also had various roles in the Chinese Embassies of Portuguese-speaking countries.

Chang Hexi has been involved in the Forum since it began and was involved in the organisation of the 1st Ministerial Conference and worked on the 2nd Ministerial Conference. (macauhub)
