14 December 2009

Maputo, Mozambique, 14 Dec – The first shipment of buses for inter-provincial passenger transport, imported from South Africa are due to arrive in Mozambique over the next few days, two months ahead of the date set for the launch of the public tender for bus routes, Mozambican newspaper Noticias reported Monday.

Taibo Issufo, the Assistant National Director for Surfaces and Transport sad that the bueses, with capacity for 60 to 85 passengers, which are in the final stages of assembly, would be provided to the operators via a credit line to be provided by a bank.

Issufo also said that the route concession, the tender for which would be launched in mid February, brought many advantages to private operators because it increased guarantees of revenue and thus payment of bank loans in a relatively quick time period.

Mozambique’s fleet of public buses totals around 1,830 vehicles. (macauhub)
