18 December 2009

Nampula, Mozambique, 18 Dec – Matanuska Africa, a company based in Monapo in Mozambique’s Nampula province is due in March 2010 to start exporting 60,000 boxes of bananas, or 2,000 tonnes, to Europe.

The announcement was made by Sylvia Vaz, human resources and communications director of Matanuska Africa at the ceremony to hand over the first box of 20 kilos of bananas, produced over the last 9 months in an area of 100 hectares, to the Nampula government.

As of March exports of bananas to Europe are due to begin following an investment of US$55 million by Matanuska in the Metocheria region, which employs 3,000 people.

The exports will be carried out via the port of Nacala and the company’s officials project that an average of 100 40-foot containers will be sent off each week.

The company has around 3,000 hectares in the Monapo area for banana plantations. (macauhub)
