Namibe, Angola, 30 Dec – The Angolan government in 2009 invested US$3.2 million in the refurbishment of the Port of Namibe, thus improving the first 240 metres of the port’s dock.

The director of the Port of Namibe, Bento da Paixão dos Santos said Tuesday that the investment had made it possible to increase the cargo processed at the port from 900,000 tonnes in 2008, to 1.4 million tonnes in 2009.

“Our plan of action for 2010 outlines maintenance of levels of production achieved this year,” he said.

According to figures from the company, every month an average of 17 ships dock at the Port of Namibe, including oil tankers.

The Port of Namibe, which was built in 1961, has a 680 metre dock for long range ships and cargo ships. (macauhub)
