China replaces USA as top buyer of Brazilian products

5 January 2010

Brasilia, Brazil, 5 Jan – China overtook the United States of America and in 2009 became for the first time ever the top buyer of Brazilian products, the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade has announced.

Last year China imported from Brazil products worth US$19.9 billion, while purchases made by the USA totalled US$15.7 billion, Foreign Trade Secretary Welber Barral said on Monday.

In 2008 the USA was the main buyer of Brazilian products, importing the equivalent of US$27.7 billion, while China only imported US$16.4 billion during the same period.

Upon presentation of the report on Brazilian trade in 2009, Barral said the change was due to the international financial crisis’s greater impact on the US economy.
