Round table of international donors to Guinea Bissau scheduled for October

Lisbon, Portugal, 17 March – The Guinea Bissau prime minister, Carlos Gomes Júnior said Tuesday in Lisbon that teh round table meeting of donors to support the country’s development would likely take place in October.

“For October we are preparing a wider-ranging round table meeting that will deal not only with the reform of the defence and security sector but also economic growth (…) the issue of drug trafficking and organised crime,” said Júnior.

The Guinean prime minister was speaking at the end of a meeting with Portuguese president, Aníbal Cavaco Silva as part of an official two-day visit to Portugal.

In relation to the high level meeting due to take place on 6 June in New York at the United Nations headquarters, Júnior said that it would serve to “discuss with partners the creation of a pension fund.”

The pension fund is a “package estimated at 35 million euros” to pay pensions to military personnel due to retire from the armed forces after the sector is reformed. (macauhub)
