Maputo, Mozambique, 25 March – The Mozambican National Statistics Institute (INE) and the Ministry for Agriculture are expected to conclude within 18 months the master plan for production of agricultural statistics, Mozambican newspaper Notícias reported.
INE recently signed a technical assistance agreement with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Fund (FAO) to carry out the programme for production of agricultural statistics, which will be funded with US$561,000 by the Italian government which is interested in developing policies that encourage food safety in the country.
This project will produce a document that assesses the current situation of the agricultural statistics system, identifies the needs of users and prepares a master plan for the next ten years that identifies the needs for training, priority areas for technical assistance, the most appropriate institutional framework to be established in order to facilitate production of data and boost INE’s technical capacity and that of the Ministry of Agriculture to generate and disseminate quality statistical data.
Speaking at the event, resident FAO representative, Maria Zimmerman, one of the signatories of the technical assistance agreement, said that the aim was for the work not only to help the development of agriculture in Mozambique, but also the most active players in rural areas. (macauhub)
