Maputo, Mozambique, 29 April – The bridge over the Rovuma River linking Mozambique and Tanzania is due to be officially inaugurated on 12 May, according to the Mozambican press.
Although the political decision to build the bridge was made in 1975 by the former president of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere and former Mozambican president, Samora Machel, work only began in 2005.
Work, which was the responsibility of the China Geo Engineering Corporation, cost some US$30 million and was paid for by both countries.
The bridge is 730 metres long and has two lanes in each direction, and its tender document included construction of around 5 kilometres of roads both on the Mozambican and Tanzanian sides of the river. (macauhub)
