Maputo, Mozambique, 6 May – Work on building Mozambique’s first Science and Technology Park has begun with the opening of foundations and installation of equipment at the site in Maluana, the Maputo-based daily Noticias reports.

Most of the containers with construction materials are already in the port of Maputo. They were shipped from India, the country responsible for financing and building the project.

Dozens of technical personnel from that country, including engineers and construction assistants, were expected to arrive on Wednesday to join the team already at the Maluana site in the Manhiça district of Maputo province.

The Science and Technology Park is a space with infrastructures and management services for the establishment of knowledge-based companies, located in an environment with formal links to higher education and research institutions.

The park will cover an area of nearly 950 hectares and aims to promote entrepreneurship and incubate small and medium sized companies, besides serving to spread knowledge and product development among anchor companies, incubators and national education and research institutions.

The initial phase will see construction of the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation, the first of various buildings to be raised in the Science and Technology Park. (macauhub)
