Angola to increase agricultural production

4 June 2010

Luena, Angola, 4 June – Angola’s Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing, Afonso Pedro Canga, Thursday in Luena re-state the Angolan government’s intention to support agricultural activities in order to increase food production, employment and reduce imports.

After the inauguration of the Luena fishing warehouse, with capacity to store 300 tons of fish, the minister said that the government was creating conditions for farmers, rural workers, agri-livestock producers and fishermen to carry out their activities with conditions that allow them to increase productivity and an increased supply of products to the population.

Canga noted that the projects to improve production conditions were accompanied by other mechanisms linked to reconstruction of primary, secondary and tertiary roads, to make circulation of goods easier and allow producers to meet their objectives.

Speaking at the fish warehouse, he said that it would receive products from sea and inland fishing and that after this one another would be built for horticultural products, as part of an irrigated area being built in that location.

The irrigated are, he noted, would total 1,000 hectares after its conclusion, an area that he considered to be reasonable to produce horticultural products and fruit and set up units for processing the products. (macauhub)
