14 June 2010

Sumbe, Angola, 14 Jun – Angola’s Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Afonso Pedro Canga, has guaranteed support for the fishing sector in the region, reports Angolan news agency Angop.

The minister made his comments last Thursday in Sumbe, at the end of a two-day visit to Kwanza Sul province.

Referring to the installation of refrigerated storage and construction of a fish unloading dock and a shipyard, Canga said plans were being prepared and financial resources mobilised in the framework of public and private investment.

He emphasised the fishing potential of Kwanza Sul, particularly Porto Amboim municipality, which in the past had a strong fishing industry that supplied the province and the nation’s capital Luanda.

Canga also said the government would continue the programme to revive the sector, which consists of providing fleet owners with industrial, semi-industrial and traditional fishing vessels.

The National Institute for Support of the Fishing Industry will soon be one of the major suppliers of fishing material (nets, buoys and other equipment) to meet the needs of fishermen and fleet owners, he added.

The Kwanza Sul coastline is 178 km long and includes the municipalities of Porto Amboim and Sumbe. (macauhub)
