Sweden to fund refurbishment of two hydroelectric facilities in Mozambique

Maputo, Mozambique, 24 June – The Chicamba and Mavuzi hydroelectric facilities in the Mozambican central province of Manica, are to be refurbished in order to produce more power, a director of state electricity company EDM said in Maputo Wednesday.

According to Mozambican newspaper Notícias, US$33 million will be provided as a donation and the remaining US$21 million as a loan.

Augusto Fernando said that by next December the company awarded the public tender launched by the government would be named, and refurbishment work on the two facilities were expected to begin in January, 2011 and take 18 to 24 months.

“This work is intended to increase power production capacity from 63 to 83 megawatts in order to meet both domestic and foreign for electricity,” the director said.

As part of this project, the governments of Mozambique and Sweden Wednesday in Maputo signed an agreement via which Sweden will provide US$54 million for reconstruction of the two facilities. (macauhub)
