Huíla province may become largest grain producer in Angola

Lubango, Angola, 9 Sept – A project that aims to turn Huíla province into the biggest supplier of grain in Angola in four years has already made it possible to identify at least 80 large producers in the region, the vice president of the Industrial Association of Angola (AIA) said Wednesday in Lubango.

Eliseu Gaspar said that producers had been identified in the municipality of Caluquembe and added that over the next few days the first contracts for large scale gran production would be signed.

“We need to transform the region of Huíla into a potential supplier of grain in the country, in order to make use of investments that the government has made in building storage barns,” he said, cited by Angolan news agency Angop.

Gaspar said this initiative was part of the agricultural loan project and aimed to capitalise on resources that the Angolan government has provided to strengthen the national economy, making public investment proportional to private investment.

Huíla province produces over 500,000 tons of grain per year, the main producers of which are the municipalities of Caluquembe, Caconda, Chicomba, Matala and Chipindo.

Transport and sale of production has been the main problem, but with the construction of silos in these municipalities (work underway) its conservation and distribution will be improved. (macauhub)
