Brazilian bike maker Caloi to open office in Shanghai

22 October 2010

Sao Paulo, Brazil, 22 Oct – The Caloi company, Brazil’s leading manufacturer of bicycles, plans to open a commercial office in Shanghai and anticipates 15 percent sales growth this year, company president Eduardo Musa said in Sao Paulo.

The main purpose of opening the Shanghai office is to bring the company closer to its major suppliers and to assure “the supply of components and parts for our factories,” he stated.

Plans call for the office to open in the first week of January.

“Our current growth is at 25 percent but we can’t maintain this pace because the factories are working at top capacity,” Musa said, adding that “growth will thus slow down and the company should close the year at 15 percent over 2009.”

Caloi is to begin implementing a 30 million-real investment plan to modernise and expand the capacity of its factories in Manaus (Amazonas) and Atibaia (Sao Paulo) in order to boost production from the current 800,000 bicycles to 1 million units.

Brazil ranks fifth in the world in annual bicycle sales and third in production. Some 5.3 million bicycles should be sold this year, the same as in 2009 but less than the 5.8 million units sold in 2008. (macauhub)
