Sumbe, Angola, 5 Nov – A cotton processing factory, with capacity to process 200 tons of cotton per day, is due to be inaugurated Friday in Sumbe municipality, in Angola’s Kwanza Sul province, by the country’s Minister for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fishing, Afonso Pedro Canga.
According to Angolan news agency Angop, the factory is the result of a partnership between Spain’s África Sementes and Angola’s Mundo Verde and will support the re-launch of the cotton crop in an area of 5,000 hectares.
Before Independence, in 1975, the province of Kwanza Sul was the second largest cotton producer in Angola, with an estimated production area of 41,000 hectares, having reached production of 21,800 tonnes in 1973.
The last cotton season in the region occurred in 1999/2000, from an area of 3,650 hectares, with total production of 500 tonnes. (macauhub)
