Mercedes Benz group to invest in construction of a vehicle assembly plant in Angola

Luanda, Angola, 16 Nov – German automotive group Mercedes Benz plans to invest US$200 million in construction of a factory in the Angolan capital, Luanda, said the chairman of Autostar, Jörg Nührmann.

Nührmann, chairman of the company that represents and distributes the German brand in Angola, told Angolan newspaper O País that as of 2012 around 800 Mercedes Benz trucks and buses would be assembled each year at the factory, which will be built in the Viana industrial area, on the outskirts of the capital.

The factory will cover an area of 42,000 square metres on a plot of land of 547,000 square metres.

Autostar, which has been operating since April sells around 30 Mercedes Benz vehicles per month and already has turnover of US$30 million.

With these investments the company plans to set itself up in Angola’s 18 provinces, starting with Benguela, Malange and Cabinda.

Nührmann said that the plan was to transform AutoStar into the largest automotive representative in Africa, with over 2,000 staff and turnover of around US$350 million. (macauhub)
