2010 positive year for Angola’s agri-livestock sector

20 January 2011

Luanda, Angola, 20 Jan – The Angolan primary sector posted positive results in 2010, the national director for Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry, Domingos Nazaré Veloso, said Tuesday in Luanda cited by Angolan news agency Angop.

As an example Veloso noted the rise in grain production from 1.29 million tons in 2009 to 1.5 million tons last year.

In terms of meat and egg production, Veloso said that the sector had produced 20,000 tons of meat and 75 million eggs, amounts that do not meet demand, and the deficit is made up for by imports.

Angola needs at least 3.6 million tons of meat to meet the demands of the population, which is estimated at 17 million people.

In order to change this situation, Veloso said it was necessary to develop programmes and projects to re-stock livestock in new areas, as well as in the provinces of Cunene, Huíla, and Namibe which have a strong tradition of livestock production.

The national Directorate for Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry, which is the responsibility of the Ministry for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, aims to draw up policies in the areas of agriculture, livestock and forestry. (macauhub)
