Praia, Cape Verde, 6 April – The National Statistic Institute (INE) of Cape Verde is to support its counterpart in Sao Tome and Principe to carry out a general census of the population and a study of poverty in the archipelago located in the Gulf of Guinea, the chairman of INE, António dos Reis Duarte said in Praia.

Cited by Cape Verdean news agency Inforpress, Reis Duarte also said that his institute would, together with the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), “lend all of its experience in this area to Sao Tome and Principe,” specifically innovations introduced in the census carried out in 2010 in Cape Verde.

In order to carry out the 4th General Census of the Population and housing, INE, with the support of the IBGE, focused on the new technologies that made Cape Verde the first country in Africa to organize and entirely digital census.

With a view to carrying out the first ever census in Sao Tome and Principe, the two institutes, as well as supporting the organisation and implementation of the process, will also provide some equipment, specifically portable digital apparatus to collect real time data with better planning.

According to the recommendations of the United Nations (UN), all countries should carry out a general population census at least every ten years. (macauhub)
