6 April 2011

Maputo, Mozambique, 6 April – The Italian government has provided around 16 million euros (US$22.8 million) to fund the Programme to Support Rural Development (PADR) in the provinces of Manica and Sofala, in central Mozambique, spokeswoman for the Sofala provincial government, Marina Karagianis said.

Speaking to newspaper Diário de Moçambique, the spokeswoman said that the programme had been one of the themes recently discussed by the provincial government but added that it was still necessary to clarify some aspects so that the programme could move on to the execution phase.

The programme will run until 2013 and its main aim is to improve the income and social and economic conditions of rural populations in those two provinces.

Specifically the programme will seek to increase competitiveness and productivity as well as contributing to reducing poverty in rural areas by boosting economic planning in the districts where community organizations play an important role. (macauhub)
