27 April 2011

Dili, East Timor, 27 April – China Tuesday formally delivered a donation of 5,000 tons of rice to East Timor in order to cover the food deficit in the country caused by a bad agricultural year, in a ceremony held at the port of Dili.

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão noted his “great recognition,” of China, “a friend that is ready to help in difficult moments,” and which, with this donation, will contribute to solving the problem of lack of food.

According to the prime minister, “there are many families that are going hungry because of the bad agricultural year last year and the rains this year,” and according to calculations from the Social Solidarity Ministry the need “is far greater than these 5,000 tons.”

Fang Xinwen, the business attaché to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in East Timor, said that the Chinese government, “sharing the concerns and difficulties felt by the Timorese, had decided to donate 5,000 tons of rice to East Timor, and send it to Dili as quickly as possible, despite heavy demand for food in China.” (macauhub)
