20 July 2011

Praia, Cape Verde, 20 July – Luxembourg’s minister for Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Marie-Josée Jacobs, is due Wednesday in Praia to sign the Indicative cooperation Programme (PIC) for the 2011-2014 period, involving a financial packages of around 60 million euros, the Cape Verdean press reported.

The new PIC agreement, which includes an additional 15 million euros against the previous financial cooperation package of 45 million euros, was agreed in April of last year during a meeting between Cape Verde’s Prime Minister, José Maria Neves, and his Luxembourg counterpart, Claude Juncker.

This third PIC will cover, as well as a partnership in professional training, higher education and research, projects in the areas of water supply and sanitation, as well as food aid for the archipelago.

Environmental protection is another aspect covered by the new PIC, which opens up the way for Cape Verde to import sand from Morocco and Mauritania to supply the domestic construction market and renew the main beaches on Santiago Islands, which have been affected by uncontrolled quarrying of their sand.

The high point of the two-day visit by Jacobs will be a meeting of the 12th Cape Verde-Luxembourg Partnership Commission, which will discuss national, regional and international issues and make a global assessment of two-way relations, as well as the outlook for implementation of the 3rd PIC.

During her stay in Cape Verde, Jacobs is also due to sign some legal instruments, specifically the Bilateral Agreement on execution of budgetary aid directed at the professional training sector in the 2011-2015 period and an Air services Agreement. (macauhub)
