Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe, 26 Aug – The United Kingdom has shown interest in selling cocoa and coffee from Sao Tome and Principe via private companies headquartered in London, the new UK ambassador to Sao Tome and Principe said Wednesday in the Sao Tome capital.
Richard Wildash made the statement just a few hours after presenting his credentials to Sao Tome’s President, Fradique de Menezes, as the new UK ambassador to the archipelago.
Wildash said that the UK government planned to re-launch its cooperation with Sao Tome and Principe in the private sector through the sale of some agricultural products, and mentioned the archipelago’s two main export products: Cocoa and coffee.
“We have a lot of important cocoa and coffee business centres in the city of London that we want to share with Sao Tome and Principe,” said the British diplomat.
In 2010 Portugal, the Netherlands and Belgium were the main buyers of cocoa, which accounted for 94 percent of the archipelago’s agricultural exports, according to the Sao Tome National Statistics Institute. (macauhub)
