Coimbra, Portugal, 9 Sept – Brazilian power company Eletrobras continues to be interested in acquiring a stake in Portuguese power company EDP – Energias de Portugal, Eletrobras executive, Ubirajara Meira, said in Coimbra Thursday.
Speaking to Portuguese news agency Lusa, Ubirajara Meira said that Eletrobras, like any other global company, “is assessing the possibility of expanding in the global market,” and is analysing the process of the sale of the Portuguese state’s stake in EDP, which could lead to the total or partial acquisition of a 20 percent block of shares.
During a Portugal-Brazil seminar about energy efficiency, held in the city of Coimbra, central Portugal, Nivalde de Castro, a Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, noted the importance of Eletrobras becoming an EDP shareholder.
“It would be a perfect marriage,” he said, adding that, “it would be very interesting for Eletrobras to begin its internationalisation via a stake in EDP because the Portuguese electricity company has shareholdings in several other countries and is already an internationalised company.” (macauhub)
