Government of Kuando-Kubango province, Angola, to launch copper mining

Menongue, Angola, 15 Sept – The government of the Angolan province of Kuanda-Kubango plans to start mining at a copper mine on the outskirts of the city of Menongue at the beginning of 2012, the local director for Industry, Geology and Mines told state newspaper Jornal de Angola.

Miguel Dala Popular gave assurances that all aspects and details of the project had been under preparation for a long time by Angolan company Geomineira which undertook prospecting work in an area of around 22 square kilometres, which holds large quantities of copper.

The provincial director for Industry, Geology and Mines said that Geomineira had Portuguese and Angolan specialists and was also carrying out copper prospecting work in the areas of Caiúndo and Luassenha.

At the moment his department is drawing up a final report on the work carried out to be sent to the Mining Ministry in order immediately to release financial, material and human resources to start copper mining within the expected deadline.

Popular said that, alongside copper, the province is also expected to contain uranium, gold, diamonds, mercury and iron and efforts were being made to start prospecting for all these minerals. (macauhub)
