Angola was the top external market for Portuguese wines in 2010

Luanda, Angola, 26 Oct – Angola was the main foreign market for Portuguese wines in 2010, with estimated sales of 55.1 million euros, according to figures from the ViniPortugal inter-professional association.

The ten-country list provided by ViniPortugal shows that Angola topped the United Kingdom, France and the United States of America in the lead group, with Portugal earning estimated revenue of 321.4 million euros in the financial year.

ViniPortugal’s representative for Angola, Sónia Fernandes, told the Angolan newspaper O País that the institution developed a plan four years ago to raise awareness among consumers, organise wine tasting events and training actions and conduct a generic media promotion campaign targeting consumers and professionals.

Besides being the top export destination for Portuguese wine, Angola alone accounts for 26 percent of total Portuguese exports, Fernandes said.

Figures for the first half of 2011, although not yet consolidated, indicate revenue on the order of 30 million euros, she added. (macauhub)
