Chinese group Huawei to donate computer equipment to Brazil’s academic network

5 December 2011

Brasilia, Brazil, 5 Dec – Chinese group Huawei plans to donate computer equipment to Brazil’s National Network of Teaching and Research, which will be used as part of a new cloud computing facility under the terms of an agreement that was recently signed.

The agreement outlines the donations of datacentres with a large storage capacity which, once they are linked up to the Brazilian academic network, will be used to set up a cloud computing storage facility to support research and teaching applications.

The director general of the network, Nelson Simões, said that the centres would be installed by March, 2012 and were, “high performance facilities that will allow the institutions linked to the network to have access to computing and storage and carry out research and education projects in a new and much more efficient way.”

The equipment will be installed in Recife and in Manaus, and the Minister for Science and Technology, Aloizio Mercadante said that installation in the north and northeast of the country was justified by the need to drive development of those regions. (macauhub)
